Description:
Abstract:
The distributed systems (DS) management is a very important issue, which affects their operation, because they usually include a very large number of widespread resources, where their control has particular difficulty if it is not implemented with special and various techniques and approaches. In this chapter, after explaining what management is in DS, we introduce the concepts of management policies and management domains. Domains are the administrators’ spheres of influence and enclose the managed objects/resources, which are governed by the policies of interest (e.g., configuration, performance, non-security, accounting, and fault tolerance). The management areas of a DS are examined, and important problems are analyzed, such as those of consistency, conflict, and the synergy of policy and management domains. A brief reference is also made to examples of modern management tools.
