Description:
Abstract:
This study aims to describe and critically analyse fundamental aspects of Giorgos Seferis's poetic theory, focusing on its connections and responses to the basic principles of Anglo-Saxon modernism. In this context, it also examines the interpretations, evaluations and popularisations of Seferis' theoretical contributions by modern and contemporary literary critics. The study focuses on four main concepts that are considered to be "keys" to Seferis's poetic theory: language, translation, myth and history. Special attention is paid to the strategy by which the Greek poet transforms and hybridises central concepts and practices of the Anglo-Saxon modernist paradigm (mainly the poetics of T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound), in order to negotiate them with selected elements of Greek cultural "tradition" and to adapt them to the limits of tolerance of Greek culture in the interwar and early postwar decades. Individual chapters also attempt to shed light on the processes of critical validation and canonisation of the poet's theoretical elaborations, through which the construction of the theoretical matrix of Greek modernism was completed and normalised, both artistically and institutionally. In the course of this study, a wide range of textual evidence is critically examined. This material falls into four categories: a) essays, poems and other texts by G. Seferis (including letters, notes, diary entries, excerpts from interviews, etc.); b) poems, essays and other texts by G. Seferis (including letters, notes, diary entries, excerpts from interviews, etc.). ); b) poems, essays and other texts by key figures of Anglo-Saxon poetic modernism; c) poems and essays by other Greek poets and prose writers; and d) texts of modern and recent Greek and international literary criticism that reflect (and allow us to compare) the reception and normalisation of Anglo-Saxon modernism and of Seferis's theoretical concepts.
