Abstract: |
This textbook deals with the phenomenon of civil wars in the modern era. These are conflicts, and wars, which do not pit society against an external enemy but which, on the contrary, unfold within it, turning one part of it against another.
Civil wars are not a phenomenon of our time. In all historical periods, we can see traces of conflicts to which we could fearlessly attribute the term. In ancient times, civil wars were a special field of political reflection, both in the Greek and Roman worlds. But in the modern era, from the dawn of the 19th century to our days, the phenomenon has acquired special characteristics as complex as our era itself.
Economic interests, class struggle and social injustices, conflicts within the ruling elites, generate this type of conflict. Ideologies, religions, and pragmatic or metaphysical visions come to "dress up" these oppositions and become the banners of the war between them.
This manual proposes the study of the civil wars of the modern era with a comparative approach, examining the common characteristics of the major differences of the most "classic" wars of the genre: the American (1861-1865), the Russian (1918-1922), the Spanish (1936-1939) and "ours", the Greek (1946-1949).
Through this comparative overview, we can first understand and understand the characteristics of civil wars, the circumstances in which they arise, their weight in national and world history, what they destroy and what they create.
Though it is not possible to exhaust, in the context of an educational textbook, such a complex phenomenon, we assume that through the reading and study of the present, the reader will have the first orientation for a subsequent deeper acquaintance with a phenomenon that is much discussed in our own time.
