Description:
Abstract:
Marine marginal or transitional sedimentation environments that develop in the coastal zone and form the transition between terrestrial and marine sedimentation environments are presented. The category of marginal/transitional environments includes (a) deltas, (b) lagoons, (c) barrier islands, (d) tidal fields, (e) estuaries/floodplains and (f) coastal marsh. The ways in which these coastal environments are formed and evolved, and the influence of climate, tectonics and geomorphological evolution of the area are described. As they are sensitive environmental ecosystems and, in most cases, protected by international treaties, reference is made to the impact of human activity and climate change on them.
