In Chapter 1 of this book, the reader is presented with a brief overview of the evolution of sericulture as an agricultural activity and then the current situation of sericulture is described at a world-wide level. In the following sections of this chapter, historical and current data are presented on the status of sericulture in Greece and the problems and difficulties that hinder the growth of this sector, at a national and European level, are extensively described. The emphasis in this chapter is given to the ongoing transition of sericulture from an exclusively agricultural activity to an agro-biotechnological activity, as it is currently witnessed worldwide.
