This Chapter focuses on the issue of reaching consensus in a distributed networking environment, highlighting its importance and the differences presented in relation to centralized solutions. Additionally, the Byzantine Generals Problem is introduced and how consensus techniques in a blockchain network environment can provide a solution is explained. Finally, well-known techniques (e.g., PoW, PoS) that have been applied to achieve consensus in the most popular blockchain networks are discussed.
