The historiography of Greek art music from the 19th to the early 20th century
Authors: Sakallieros, Giorgos
Description:
Abstract:
The historical background and the research methods on Greek art music under an epistemological point of view are discussed in Chapter 1. The historiographic review is primarily focused on the first two, out of three, established time frames of modern Greek art-music history (music in the Ionian Islands during the 19th century; urban musical life and National School during the first half of the 20th century; post-1950 musical avant-garde). By co-examining composers, trends, institutions and music creation, the narrative of the musical canon and its fissures are defined through an interdisciplinary approach that includes repercussions of ideologies, identities and socio-political blendings.
