Description:
Abstract:
This textbook is an annotated student’s edition with a translation of the First Catilinarian Oration, a rhetorical speech that Marcus Tullius Cicero gave to the Senate in the year of his consulship in 63 B.C. accusing a senator, Lucius Sergius Catilina of treason. The textbook is addressed mainly to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and besides this, it is also addressed to the educated general reader. It includes four introductory chapters: Roman rhetoric, the life and work of Cicero, the historical background of the speech, and special topics on the First Catilinarian Oration (purpose of the speech, generic classification, metaphorical imagery, editorial issues, comparison of the First Catilinarian Oration with the other three Catilinarian speeches, philosophical echoes, the reception of the Catilinarian speeches from antiquity to the present day). Six chapters follow, each articulated in six sections (introductory note, text, vocabulary, translation, commentary, references). The textbook makes extensive use of multimedia material, such as pictures, maps, videos, audio files, etc. Graphs and tables with chronologies and various historical data are also used for a better understanding of the work.
