Description:
Abstract:
This book aims to present the cultural evolution of man from the moment of his appearance on Earth approximately 2.6 million years ago until the end of the Neolithic era. It covers the entire period of the Stone Age, an era that represents a key stage in the evolution of human civilization. The book presents the main characteristics of each period of the Stone Age (Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic) related to habitation, economy, society, burial customs and beliefs, the techniques developed (stone carving, ceramics, basket weaving, jewelry, etc.), and art. Since the Stone Age spans the geological periods of the Pleistocene and the Holocene, during which major climatic and geomorphological changes occur on a global scale, knowledge of these changes in the palaeoenvironment proves fundamental to understanding this long period. Thus, the book briefly presents the most important paleoclimatic events that drastically influence both the formation of paleogeography and the landscape, as well as the cultural evolution of man. It also presents the most important archaeological sites of Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. Although the archaeological sites are numerous, the book selects those most important and necessary for the knowledge of an undergraduate student or any reader seeking a comprehensive understanding of the Stone Age in this wider region.
