Abstract: |
This book aims to present the cultural evolution of man from the moment of his appearance on earth approximately 2.6 million years ago until the end of the Neolithic era. It covers the entire period of the Stone Age, an era that is a key stage in
the evolution of human civilization. The aim of this book is to present the main characteristics of each period of the Stone Age (Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic) related to the habitation, economy, society, burial customs and beliefs, the techniques developed (stone carving, ceramics, basket weaving) , jewelry, etc.) and art. Since the Stone Age covers the geological periods of the Pleistocene and the Holocene, where major climatic and geomorphological changes occurred on a global scale, the knowledge of all these changes in the palaeoenvironment is very fundamental to understanding this long period. Thus, this book will briefly present the most important paleoclimatic events which drastically influenced both the formation of paleogeography and the landscape as well as the cultural evolution of man.
Also, the most important archaeological sites of Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean will be presented. Although the archaeological sites are numerous, the most important and necessary for the knowledge of an undergraduate student or for any reader who wants a comprehensive knowledge of the Stone Age in our wider region have been selected.
