Abstract:
The present book entitled “Byzantine Ecclesiastical Hymns for four-part mixed choir” is purposed for purely didactic reasons and it can be used either as main or as complementary bibliography by music lecturers and students of the Greek-speaking Music Departments in Universities and Academic Institutions, for subjects related to choral singing and music analysis of Byzantine ecclesiastical hymns. It consists of seven chapters, in which the European harmonization and stylistic approach of the Byzantine ecclesiastical hymns are described, accompanied by music scores and music files in mp3 form. In the first chapter there is a brief introduction to the relation of European and Byzantine music through the centuries. In the second chapter the main European ecclesiastical forms and styles are analysed, with special reference to the ones that the harmonization of the Byzantine ecclesiastical hymns is based on. In the third chapter issues of instrumentation are analysed, emphasising on the instrument categories that were used to create the instrumental accompaniment of the Byzantine ecclesiastical hymns in the mp3 files. In the fourth chapter there is a description of learning methodology and vocal techniques in approaching the vocalization of the four-part mixed choir Byzantine ecclesiastical hymns. In the fifth chapter the music scores of selected hymns of Ermologion are presented. In the sixth chapter the music scores of selected hymns of the Sticherarium are presented. In the seventh chapter the music scores of selected hymns of Ηolly Μysteries and Μasses of the Byzantine ecclesiastical music are presented. The book also includes contents preface from Dr. Michael Stroumbakis, Associate Professor of Historic Byzantine Musicology, bibliography and index of Byzantine four-part mixed choir hymns.
