Description:
Abstract:
The current linear economic model of “take, make, dispose” has led to excessive pressure on the ecosystems, due to the uncontrolled exploitation of natural resources and waste generation. The circular economic model aims to gradually decouple economic growth from the consumption of finite resources and could actively rebuild biodiversity. In a circular economy, waste doesn’t exist. The products will be reused, again and again, keeping materials circulating for as long as possible. It is a philosophy of reusing, repurposing, regenerating. Natural ecosystems, including the continuous flow of materials, inspire the circular economy. Waste is recycled and brought back into production processes. The circular economy in the agri-food sector is linked to the "smart" management of biomass, leading to a variety of products (soil improvers, animal feed, biofuels, etc.). The reuse of waste and by-products eliminates environmental pollution and also increases the economic value of the agri-food chain, leading to a "zero waste" society. Nowadays, “circular” entrepreneurship represents an emerging market with huge potential. The “circular” enterprises go further than the usual sustainable development practices and are associated with economic growth and many opportunities. The present book aims to analyze the contribution of the circular economy to the agri-food sector. It’s thoroughly researched the concept of circular economy and its applications in agri-food enterprises. The book also studies the "circular" opportunities, the inhibiting factors, and the relevant business models. The book's last part is dedicated to various Greek and global good practices in the agri-food sector.
