Abstract:
Extraction processes are discussed at an introductory level. The equilibrium of mixtures of sparingly soluble liquids is expressed in terms of triangular diagrams, and mass balances are derived for a staged operation. Simplified equations are provided for dilute solutions. Solid adsorbents are introduced, and ideas leading to the definition of adsorption isotherms are presented. The breakthrough curve of an adsorbent column is discussed. The efficiency of adsorption in a column is contrasted to that in a stirred vessel.
