Abstract:
The purpose of the book is to systematically present the basic theoretical and practical aspects of interpreting as an autonomous scientific discipline of Translation Studies and a professional activity. Its specific objective is to provide students and aspiring interpreters with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills and professional values needed to understand and apply in practice the complex process of interpreting: from the phase of preparation to the phase following the conclusion of the interpreting process. As far as the theoretical content is concerned, the book presents a critical overview of the general principles and fundamental issues of interpreting, such as: how interpreting is defined and how it differs from related activities, in what categories it is distinguished, what theoretical considerations contributed to its development, in what settings and what modes of interpreting interpreters work, what the relevant requirements are, what the rules of professional ethics are and how the profession is affected by modern technological developments. As far as the practical aspects of the book are concerned, students become familiar with the basic skills of interpreting. The issues addressed from that point of view are how interpreting is performed in practice, what cognitive processes are involved, what techniques are applied to each mode of interpreting, what the potential roles and tasks of interpreters are and how they should behave in the performance of their duties. The aforementioned issues are addressed in six chapters, each one of which is followed by several comprehension questions as well as exercises for practical application, using, where possible, authentic material.
