Abstract:
The aim of this book is to collect, record, study and correlate elements that reflect in the best possible way the physiognomy of Athens during the last decades of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. To present the image of the city, or rather the small village, that King Otto in the post-revolutionary years made the capital of the newly established Greek state, thus giving it the prospect of evolving over time into a modern city, following western European standards. It thus created the conditions and laid the foundations for the development of a city which, year after year, grew thanks to the constant internal migration of people from all corners of the country and the arrival of people from abroad. An attempt is therefore made to capture the image of the first small houses that gradually gave way or coexisted with other large, beautiful, imposing buildings. As the urban landscape changes due to the use of new materials and the rise in living standards, the image of the city's inhabitants, their way of living and dressing, but also the particular characteristics of their domestic and professional life, their habits, their comforts and their problems, all the elements that shape the everyday life of the Athenians, also change. It also presents the educational, cultural and intellectual life of the inhabitants of Athens, as well as the position of women in social life and examines the continuous development of the city, its buildings, streets, public transport, energy systems for heating and lighting, factors that constitute a modern advanced society. The aim of the book is to present as accurately as possible the European, especially the French, influence on the development of the capital of the modern Greek state and its citizens in all areas and on the formation of the improved image of the country by the beginning of the 20th century.
