Abstract:
This book is addressed to students at polytechnic schools and associated university departments offering them complete knowledge on the topic of sustainable mobility and Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP). It is the first greek book that covers this scientific topic, and its necessity is justified, among others, by the fact that the planning of urban mobility systems through a more sustainable and human-centered philosophy is an integral part of the urban design of modern and environmentally friendly cities. The book has been organized in such a way so that it follows the teaching process of the courses that is about to be taught. More specifically, the first two chapters aim at familiarizing students with the subject of sustainable urban mobility and its necessity, as well as with the SUMPs, their role and content. Afterwards, the students will receive all the necessary knowledge for the implementation of SUMPs, such as the participatory planning, the evaluation of the existing situation, the development of alternative scenarios, the formulation of sustainable mobility measures and the monitoring and evaluation of the performance of sustainable mobility systems. The citation of good practices from Greece and abroad will contribute to the assimilation of the knowledge provided. The most established and emerging systems and models of sustainable urban mobility are also presented; knowledge useful for students who will further engage with the broader subject of urban planning. The extensive bibliography provided in each chapter, the presentation of technical terms in an understandable way, the provision of many images/pictures for more effective assimilation of knowledge and the numerous evaluation criteria are key advantages of the book that will significantly help teachers in teaching the subject covered by the book.
