Abstract: |
This book is addressed to undergraduate and postgraduate students. It is an anthology of Latin poetry of Late Antiquity (3rd-7th centuries AD). Its subject is the study of the main poetic genres of the period through the texts themselves. In addition to the necessary introduction, from which the reader can draw a lot of information on the historical and political circumstances and the literary trends of this era (e.g., the generic mixture, the emergence of new literary genres or the decline of old ones), a number of poets are studied, corresponding to various literary genres from the 3rd to the 7th century AD. The structure of the book's chapters corresponds to a different literary genre each time (except for Chapters 1 and 12, which correspond to the prologue and epilogue respectively, and Chapter 7, which deals with various poetic genres). In this book, the reader will find a variety of literary genres and poets: epic, epyllion, elegy, bucolic poetry, epigram, panegyrics, epithalamia, Christian poetry, centos, etc., namely Claudian, Dracontius, Reposianus, Maximianus, Rutilius Namatianus, Luxorius, Venantius Fortunatus, etc. Consequently, he/she will be introduced into a not so widely known period of Latin poetry and will complement his/her knowledge of the evolution of its literary genres. All the anthologized Latin texts have been translated into Modern Greek, and a detailed vocabulary follows. Each Latin text is preceded by a summary of the text, and followed by commentaries (with various notes). At the end of each chapter, there is a bibliography and questions. The aims of the present book are to introduce students to a field that is widely studied in recent years, to make them understand the similarities and differences between Latin poetry of Late Antiquity and the Augustan period, and thus to realize its evolution and its original aesthetic value.
