Abstract:
This textbook is addressed to undergraduate students of Library Science and Archives faculties as well as to related departments who have courses in documentation and catalogue/register/ bibliography creation etc. It is also addressed to employees of relevant institutions such as libraries and archives of the public and private sector, museums, documentation centers, bibliographic and publishing organizations and information institutions in general. It reflects the developments concerning the creation of catalogues in a digital environment, the new cataloguing rules that have emerged as a result of the potential of the semantic web and the technologies that support the description of information resources. It presents the possibilities of integrating old and new systems and the dynamics of standardization by presenting the most advanced international standards in this field. It includes a presentation of the context for the development and evolution of catalogues, the use and utility of specific processes in the digital realm and a presentation of standards. It is also a guide to the implementation and development of catalogues based on the latest international standards (i.e. RDA) and the international guidelines that govern them. In this respect, we believe that the proposed text will also serve as a reference work when applied both in the context of academic studies and in the professional field. It is noted that this textbook can be a key tool for all cataloguing issues as it covers the main new rules in detail, including both the original documentation of the guidelines and examples of implementation. In addition to the new cataloging rules, a detailed presentation of the standards used by the automated systems of information organizations is given, making the manual fully applicable to any automated cataloging environment. Therefore, students as well as graduates of the aforementioned departments will have in their hands a comprehensive text on both theoretical and practical level.
