Abstract:
This chapter provides a brief account of the history and evolution of Bibliometrics from its early days (1830) to its consolidation days as a scientific field (1950) and to the present day through sources of information, books, and scientific articles. These items describe the subject of Bibliometrics, its goals, its importance, and its role in sciences. The history of Bibliometrics can be divided into three chronological periods, a period of immaturity when the statistical bibliographical approach was first attempted, a maturity period with the development of Bibliometrics focusing on bibliographic citations, on the relationships of texts and authors, and on the impact indices, and a modern period, the altmetrics era, with the use of alternative indicators based on the World Wide Web and webometrics. The emblematic bibliography of Bibliometrics is presented in chronological order that follows the evolution of scientific publication itself as a subject of study, the mathematical laws applied practically, the significance of Bibliometrics in scientific literature, the importance of bibliographic reference, and the impact indices in their many different forms.
