This chapter is dedicated to the presentation of the word recognition-identification mechanism during reading. The role of visual recognition and attention, the role of memory and the contribution of metalanguage skills in the decoding of written words are pointed. The main procedures for recognizing written words, phonological and morphological mediation and syntactic awareness are presented.
