Abstract:
The methodology for writing down mass balances is outlined. Recycle, bypass and purge streams are singled out and their operational significance is discussed. Examples are solved for physical processes, such as crystallization, distillation, extraction, and steam generation, and for processes involving chemical reactions. The flowsheet of an ammonia synthesis plant is used as an all-inclusive problem. The general energy balance is derived and simplifications pertinent to thermal processes are discussed. The methodologies for estimating enthalpy changes are reviewed, and the standard enthalpies of reaction and mixing are defined. Problems involving a combination of mass and energy balances are solved, with examples from evaporation, distillation and combustion processes, lime kilns and inorganic solution mixing.
