Abstract:
In this chapter we study the application of the finite difference method for the approximation of the solution of second order differential equations in one variable, with various boundary conditions, e.g., of the Dirichlet and Neumann type. We show existence of the approximate solution and introduce the concept of consistency and stability of a numerical method. We also show an error estimation for the approximate solution. The analysis presented in this chapter is a guideline for the study of the finite difference method to partial differential equation problems.
