Abstract:
The information technology revolution is changing the fundamental ways of accessing information. An increasing amount of information is becoming available in electronic form, networks interconnect computers worldwide, and the World Wide Web provides the basis for accessing a large volume of information, ranging from newspaper articles to music files, all readily available for anyone. But the same technological developments that provide easy access to this information, at the same time, cause important issues of concern regarding the issues of copyright and its protection. This happens because the same technology that makes access to information easy, at the same time contributes to the easy copying of information, whether it is considered a legal or illegal process. As a result, many intellectual property rules that apply to physical objects do not apply with the same effect to digital environments. This particular problem is reinforced by the continuous and unrestricted growth of the Internet and by the wider and persistent networking of computers. These are the topics that concern the present chapter.
