This chapter introduces the concept of interoperability and its importance in the exchange and mutual use of geographic data. It develops the different aspects of interoperability, as well as the levels of interoperability achieved between independent GIS. It also discusses the main forms of heterogeneity that cause problems in data exchange and the role of standards in ensuring effective data use between heterogeneous GIS.
