Abstract: |
This chapter deals with: a) basic concepts of geometry of the Physical Earth Surface, b) cartographic projections, c) geodetic reference systems and finally, d) the types of coordinate transformations in the plane. This chapter highlights the importance of cartographic projections in the visual representation of geographical phenomena, the importance of defining reference systems and finally presents the geodetic systems used in Greece. Firstly, basic knowledge concerning the shape and size of the Earth is introduced and the concept of cartographic projection is defined, some cartographic projections are analysed and the distortions they bring to geometric quantities are presented. Next, cartographic projections used in Greece are presented, followed by the corresponding projection systems that use them. Finally, it is discussed how plane transformations are carried out from one coordinate system to another.
