Abstract:
The chapter aims to: a) present the types of geographic data, b) highlight the different sources of available geographic information, and c) explain the methods of data collection and the ways of converting the data into an appropriate format. First, a definition of the term 'data collection' is given and the necessity of identifying and obtaining data in the desired/appropriate format is discussed. Next, the types of data that a GIS can include are presented, and then the main sources of geographic data are highlighted. In addition, various collection techniques for acquiring new and updated data such as topographic surveys, photogrammetry, remote sensing, etc. are discussed. and various techniques for processing the data so that they can be incorporated into a GIS are presented. Finally, services and bodies for making existing data available are mentioned.
