Abstract: |
The chapter examines the space-time dynamics and changes in risk, exposure, vulnerability, resilience and risk perception, as well as the conditions or catalysts for these changes. In particular, it addresses issues of (a) cycling and mutations of vulnerability under conditions of social and economic crisis, (b) amplification of vulnerability and exposure under conditions of low risk uptake, (c) cycling of vulnerability into the future or its transformation from individual to collective (and vice versa) under the influence of specific versions of adaptive capacity, and (d) expansion of exposure and production of new risks as a result of development and technological progress. In the context of this reflection, disadvantaged social strata / actors and disadvantaged 'risk positions' are of central interest. These dynamics are presented and interpreted through empirical examples from Greece and internationally.
