Authors: Sapountzaki, Kalliopi

Description:
Abstract:
The chapter presents the three main submodels/approaches to 'risk perception', namely the psychometric, the anthropological-sociological approach and the interdisciplinary one whose most widespread and recognized model is the Social Risk Reinforcement Framework (SARF). The chapter gives particular emphasis to the effects of risk perception on the so-called 'acceptable' risk of a community, i.e. the marginal risk that the community considers to be exceeded and is now willing to try to The chapter concludes with issues relating to the production and processing of risk information, its transmission from transmitters to final recipients, and the implications of these processes for risk and disaster management. The above issues are highlighted with relevant examples from Greece and internationally and in relation to a wide range of risks.
