Abstract:
The book presents the practice, the science and the ethics of conservation and preservation of paper, books and archival materials and is addressed to the students of the Department of Archival, Library & Information Studies, University of West Attica, an audience that may not possess the specialized knowledge of chemistry, physics and materials technology. Where necessary, it delves into technical and scientific details, so that it can also serve as a scientific and technical conservation manual addressing paper, book and archival materials conservators and conservation scientists. The Book is structured in 4 parts: A. Objects and materials: The history, construction, structure, and properties of the most common materials (paper, leather, parchment, inks, synthetic polymers) and objects (paper document, book, archival file, photograph, motion picture film, disc, magnetic tape, digital objects) held in archives and libraries. B. Ageing and deterioration of books and archival material: The causes and mechanisms of deterioration of paper, books and archival materials. C. Conservation methods of paper, books and archival material: Technics and materials used for the conservation of paper, books and archival materials. D. Preservation in libraries and archives: The preservation measures and appropriate storage conditions for the materials and objects discussed in part A.
