Abstract: |
This book is intended for undergraduate students, mainly from polytechnic schools, who are taught introductory but broad concepts and tools related to the design and management of industrial units. The book adopts a systematic/holistic approach that includes people, processes, and technology, and consists of two parts. The first part deals with the design of new or the redesign of existing plants, while the second part deals with the management of operating plants. In the first part, in addition to presenting the basic areas of design decisions (process selection, spatial layout, capacity, supply network, technology, work organization), the book also discusses the design process itself as a project process. The second part focuses on issues related to the management of an industrial unit and discusses in detail both classic production management issues (production planning and control, inventory and material and product flow management) as well as more contemporary issues such as factory operation from the perspective of lean manufacturing, quality management, and performance measurement and improvement.
