Description:
Abstract:
The seventh chapter presents the method of Attenuated Total Reflectance–Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). It begins with a brief review of the fundamental principles of infrared spectroscopy, followed by an analysis of the vibrations of polyatomic molecules and the interpretation of the information that can be obtained from infrared absorption spectra. Next, the chapter presents typical configurations and the operating principles of dispersive spectrophotometers and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrophotometers, followed by a description of the Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) technique. Finally, the chapter concludes with a presentation of a series of applications of the ATR-FTIR method for the examination and characterization of the molecular structure of inorganic and organic materials — such as construction materials, minerals, pigments, inorganic colorants, biomaterials, and more.
