Abstract: |
The fifth chapter presents the method of Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy in the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared spectrum (UV-VIS-NIR) using fiber optics (Fiber Optics Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy – FORS). It begins with an introduction to the fundamental concepts of colorimetry, followed by an analysis of widely used colorimetric systems and the theories developed regarding the behavior of light radiation. Next, the typical configurations and operating principles of reflectance and diffuse reflectance spectrophotometers are described, followed by the interpretation of the retrieved information from diffuse reflectance spectra, particularly regarding the relationship between molecular structure and color. Finally, applications of the FORS technique are presented for determining the mineralogical nature and obtaining information about the chemical composition of various materials, such as minerals, pigments, and inorganic colorants, particularly in the study of wall paintings and sculptural objects.
