Description:
Abstract:
The second chapter presents the technique of Infrared Thermography. It begins with a review of the fundamental principles of infrared radiation, followed by a brief reference to the spectral properties of both blackbodies and grey bodies, the main modes of heat transfer, and the thermophysical properties that must be considered for the interpretation and evaluation of the results obtained through thermographic testing. Next, a brief description is provided of the two main thermographic testing techniques — the passive and the active approaches — outlining their implementation methods and the characteristics of each method. This is followed by a presentation of the main thermographic signal processing techniques used to extract qualitative and/or quantitative information. The chapter concludes with practical applications of both passive and active thermographic testing.
