Abstract:
This chapter covering the concepts of nation, nationalism and self-determination is divided into four parts, as follows: (1) nation and nationalism, including the various theories of nationalism (primordialism, modernism, ethno-symbolism), civic and ethnic nationalism, patriotism and national narratives; (2) the principle of nationalities or national self-determination as it ended-up being called and its historical trajectory from its inception in the early 19th century until 1919-1920 (Paris International Conference); the regime of self-determination of peoples of the United Nations; and (4) the problematic question of secessionist self-determination and how to deal with it normatively.
