Abstract:
This e-book (textbook) which is mainly intended for undergraduate students, covers and analyzes the following. It starts with the two main historical traditions in International Relations, realism and internationalism-liberalism and their main adherents from antiquity until today and it then presents the four International Relations debates cum scientific crises from the 1930s until today as well as the main present-day schools of thought in International Relations theory. This is followed by a chapter on foreign policy and diplomacy and a chapter on power, balance of power, militarization, the arms races, strategy, security and critical security studies. This chapter is followed by war (types of war, reasons for resorting to armed conflict and the normative dimension of war). Then there is a chapter devoted to conflict, conflict analysis and conflict resolution (negotiations, mediations, good office, adjudication, etc., and Track Two diplomacy). It is followed by a chapter on international law, its historical trajectory and the present-day (United Nations) state of play of international law and its sources. After that there is a chapter on nation and nationalism, national self-determination, self-determination of peoples and secession. The next chapter is on various aspects of human rights (history, normative dimension, human rights foreign policy), followed by a chapter intervention, non-intervention and humanitarian intervention. The last chapter covers geopolitics from its emergence until today. And the final chapter is devoted to the international organization of the international system.
