Abstract:
The study of inheritance patterns in humans is based on the analysis of pedigrees, which graphically represent the extended family. Traits inherited according to Mendelian patterns exhibit specific characteristics of inheritance that assist in researching genetic disorders and in counseling families that carry them. The collection of family history and the construction of a pedigree chart are part of an individual’s medical history. In modern clinical practice and research, biological relationships among family members, phenotypes, and genetic testing results must be stored in digital records that include pedigree information. This section explains how a family pedigree is obtained and recorded, analyzes typical pedigree charts, and demonstrates how they are drawn using computer software.
