This chapter discusses geopolitics and geopolitical theories from their first appearance in the late 19th century until today: (a) 1890-1945, classic geopolitical theories (the German and Anglo-Saxon schools of thought); (b) 1960-1989, geostrategy, mainly in the United States and the French ecological géopolitique; and (c) geopolitics in the post-bipolar world, with various schools of thoughts, the more traditional ones, such new forms of geo-strategy, geo-economy or geo-civilization and the new variant of critical geopolitics that is making its mark and challenging other forms of geopolitics as narratives aimed at domination.
