Abstract:
This chapter summarizes the nature and purpose of projects and services in which engineers play an increased and responsible role. Engineering projects are designed, financed, implemented, maintained, and operated within the framework of a broader infrastructure system. The importance of such projects is analyzed, and the positive correlation between the size of technical projects and the strength of the national economy is documented. This introductory chapter also includes a brief presentation of the method of systems analysis. The chapter concludes with examples of model construction for engineering project systems or subsystems.
