Description:
Abstract:
The book "Architectural design of a public building _ Τhe urban museum” explores architecture on the scales of urban planning, architecture and interior design. The urban museum is part of the construction of collective consciousness. In this direction, the modern urban museum is treated first in relation to the city and at the same time as an autonomous building. The development of the book considers the process of transition from the city to the building as crucial and redefines the public space as a driver of urban, social, cultural and economic development. It analyzes the complex functional program of the modern social museum and presents various layout plans arising from it. It deepens the design of the exhibition spaces in relation of exhibit-spectator communication. The components of the urban fabric, access flows, architectural structure, scale, intermediate and controlled spaces, history, museology, environmental psychology, thematic and sensory atmospheres, cultural policy participate in the investigation of the above. At the same time, dilemmas are involved from the need to synthesize contradictory requirements, such as the intellectual content of the museum in the service of the commercial museum, the draconian security measures in a museum open to the city, the attraction of diverse visitors, the gathering of avant-garde and the status quo. A crucial issue is the reinvention of the museum exhibit, since the removal of the object from its organic space for its exhibition in the museum is not a simple act of movement, but an action that changes the context, the situation and the meaning of the museum object. The presentation of revealing examples of museums from around the world and the comparative commentary of the different layouts offer a panorama of museum applications, including buildings designed from the ground up for museums, their extensions, as well as the revival of existing old buildings when they are reused in museums.
