Abstract: |
The book provides an overview of key issues in the political economy of development: conceptual and theoretical issues, as well as current problems. After presenting the history of the subject of "development" and distinguishing it from "growth", the book examines per capita GDP as an indicator of development, alternative ways of measuring the degree of development, and the resulting ranking of countries. The issue of inequality and its measurement is then analyzed, with special reference to the distinction between inequality between countries and within countries. The issue of absolute and relative poverty is also relevant. Next, concepts/economic tools useful for studying development are examined, such as the production possibility curve, investment, and the production function. Two sections are devoted to population issues: demography, the thinking of Malthus and his followers, and models of migration from the countryside to the city. A separate chapter is devoted to North-South relations and alternative trade strategies for extroverted growth or import substitution: the long-standing dispute between the liberal school inspired by Ricardo and protectionism is presented, along with trade conditions and types of development aid. The relationship between development and the environment is analyzed with a focus on the Kuznets environmental curve, environmental dumping, and the Kyoto Protocol. The role of technology as a driving force of the economy, forms of technological change, the concept of creative destruction, and issues of technology transfer from rich to poor countries are then examined. Finally, there is an extensive reference to the current state of affairs in the era of globalization. Pedagogical approach: presentation in a simple but not simplistic manner, with minimal mathematics and interdisciplinary elements. The textbook is understandable to students from various university departments and stimulates their thinking.
