Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter we examine the syntax-lexicon relation. This chapter consists of 5 sections, plus a section that summarises the discussion, followed by bibliographical notes, bibliography, and indicative questions and answers. Section one analyses lexical items as bundles of features with empahsis on formal features. Section two examines argument structure and the role of the predicate. Section three examines some problems with the assignment of theta-roles. Section four shows how the configurational approach to theta-roles works. It shows that the external argument is also VP-internal, while three-place predicates support the analysis that there is a ligh v above the VP. The light v is responsible for the licensing of an external argument, while internal arguments are merged within the VP. Finally, section five shows how this approach allows us to express the different structures that correspond to the number of arguments (unergatives, unaccusatives, transitives, double object constructions). This chapter aims at showing how syntax expresses the information provided from the lexicon. It also aims at showing how syntactic argumentation proceeds on the basis of the empirical data and how a working hypothesis can be formulated.
