Abstract: |
The digitization of a text allows its dynamic management by the reader and researcher, which requires the electronic encoding of the text based on a markup language. A number of such languages have been developed for encoding electronic texts, such as XML, XHTML, and XSLT. At the same time, standards and protocols have been established for the electronic documentation of textual material in digital form, such as the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), which is under continuous development and refinement.
This chapter aims to familiarize the reader with the concept of electronic text encoding and includes a detailed presentation and description of the main markup languages, with active links to the respective guidelines available online for further study. It also presents the principles and specifications of TEI, with reference to specific examples from Greek and international literature.
