Abstract

This chapter is also introductory and focuses on syntactic categories. It consists of seven sections. Section one introduces the two main parts of the sentence, namely the subject and the predicate. Section two introduces the notion of syntactic categories. Sections three and four consider the distinction between lexical and functional (or grammatical) categories. Section five examines the role of the lexicon in deriving crosslinguistics variation. Finally, sections six and seven introduce the notion of the constituent, the hierarchical structure of the sentence and its representation with tree-diagrams. These sections are followed by a summary, further reading, bibliography and exercises.

Το κεφάλαιο αυτό είναι επίσης εισαγωγικό και εστιάζει στις συντακτικές κατηγορίες. Το κεφάλαιο αποτελείται από 7 βασικές ενότητες. Η πρώτη ενότητα διακρίνει τα δύο βασικά μέρη της πρότασης (υποκείμενο-κατηγόρημα). Η δεύτερη ενότητα εισάγει την έννοια της συντακτικής κατηγορίας. Η τρίτη και τέταρτη ενότητα εξετάζουν τη διάκριση ανάμεσα σε λεξικές και λειτουργικές κατηγορίες. Η πέμπτη ενότητα εξετάζει τον ρόλο του λεξικού στις διαγλωσσικές διαφορές. Τέλος οι ενότητες έξι και επτά εισάγουν την έννοια του συστατικού, την ιεραρχική δομή της πρότασης και τη σχηματική αναπαράστασή της με δενδροδιαγράμματα. Το κεφάλαιο ολοκληρώνεται με την ανακεφαλαίωση, συμπληρωματική βιβλιογραφία, βιβλιογραφικές αναφορές και κριτήρια αξιολόγησης.
