Abstract: |
Since its establishment, the Department of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Crete has included the course "Doctor-Patient Relationship" among the elective compulsory courses of the first semester. The following pages correspond to the lectures of this course, which were taught during the period 1991–2014. This effort is based on lecture notes, which have been organized into thematic units and converted into written text. There were many difficulties in this endeavor, the most significant being the lack of Greek literature and systematic research in our country on this specific subject. Furthermore, it cannot be ignored that the analysis of the doctor-patient relationship requires an interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral approach, which currently dominates undergraduate teaching in health sciences faculties in modern Europe. The author is aware that the development of the topic of the doctor-patient relationship is not complete, as important topics are missing, such as: the demanding, neurotic, and generally mentally ill patient; monitoring the patient after the visit to the doctor's office; and the patient in hospital. The following people have contributed significantly to the preparation of these notes: Mr. H. Psaroudakis, the former secretary of the Department of Social Medicine, Ms. M. Andrianaki, and the researcher - General Practitioner Ms. F. Anastasiou. In addition, the following individuals assisted in the writing of individual chapters: Ms. E. Pitelou, collaborator of the Clinic of Social and Family Medicine, and Ms. G. Aspriki, Anthropologist, Mr. N. Georgiannos, General Practitioner, and Ms. E. Iatrakis, Social Worker and Psychologist. The aim of the university course for which it is intended is to help young doctors understand the attitudes and behavior of their patients, in order to enable them to build a successful relationship with them. This publication can be used as the main textbook for the needs of the University of Crete course.
