Description:
Abstract:
This book is addressed to those interested in discovering the “secrets” of the art of film, exploring the numerous, complex aesthetic and practical issues involved in the contruction of a cinematic or other audiovisual work, in order to use this knowledge in their own work, or to just become better viewers. Completing this guide to the various aspects of filmmaking, with the aid of characteristic examples from the history of world cinema, the readers will form a comprehensive picture of the evolution and diversity of film language and will be able to recognize the basic structural elements of a film, understanding the choices of its creator. They will also become familiar with the basic tools and techniques of audiovisual construction, which they can apply to their own creative practices. Each chapter consists of two distinct parts: The first one presents and analyzes the issue in hand, using selected examples from a wide range of artistic schools, genres and stylistic approaches. The second one focuses on the making of the short fiction film ‘Apographi’ (‘Inventory’), directed and produced by the two authors respectively, offering a step-by-step account of all its production stages from the initial concept to the final cut, thus connecting the theoretical study to a specific, concrete practical application.
