Description:
Abstract:
The book deals with the changing considerations of the relationship between the city and nature in urban planning. The first chapter traces the origins of the concepts of urban sustainability and resilience in early manifestations of the environmental movement and highlights important contemporary shifts. The second chapter focuses on how nature is conceptualized and seeks to integrate or conflate with the city in urban planning. The debate on the sustainable and resilient city is broken down into its individual themes and indicative elements of the environmental approach in each theme are listed. The third chapter focuses on exploring the urban forms promoted as sustainable. Realised examples of new neighbourhoods and existing cities pursuing a new relationship with the environment through comprehensive and multi-level urban strategies are presented. Chapter four discusses critical approaches to contemporary understandings of the city's relationship with nature, with a focus on contemporary discourses of urban political ecology. The critique starts from a different conceptualization of nature that challenges its intellectual separation from society. Within such a conceptualization, the political dimensions of the city's environmental problems are highlighted. Finally, the fifth chapter of the book illuminates aspects of the relationship between Greek urbanization and the environment as they are highlighted through the study of official state policy, the institutional framework of urban planning and individual urban policies and interventions.
