Description:
Abstract:
Tenth chapter describes the use of reference materials by manufacturers and laboratories to ensure standardization and traceability of the methods and reagents they produce or use respectively. At present, standardized reference materials (“certified reference materials”) do not exist for all analytes of laboratory medicine. Certified reference materials are globally recognized and their values are accompanied by an amount of uncertainty. The basic principles of the mathematical value of uncertainty will be explained and a relevant example of its determination in a quantitative measurement of a clinical chemistry parameter will be given. Traceability of reference materials, equipment calibration and uncertainty assessment are basic requirements for the accreditation of clinical laboratories according to ISO 15189. All clinical laboratories should strive to accredited with ISO 15189 which is the strongest proof that a laboratory produces reliable results and has a high-quality status.
