Description:
Abstract:
This chapter addresses adaptations as an approach and method of supporting students with learning disabilities in the general classroom. The use of adaptations contributes to making the school environment more inclusive and accessible for all students. There are three main categories of adaptations: accommodations, minor adaptations, and major adaptations. These adaptations are implemented in terms of the curriculum, instruction, and classroom ecology. This chapter provides an extensive discussion on curriculum adaptations, focusing on what is taught to the student. It also explores instructional adaptations, which pertain to how new knowledge is taught to the student and how the student responds to it. Adaptations related to classroom ecology, address where, when, and with whom the learning takes place—covering the physical environment, timing, and the social composition of the group.
