Abstract: |
This chapter provides an extensive discussion on reading and writing, as the two aspects of written language, topics that hold significant importance in both international scientific research and educational practice. It addresses the relationship between reading and oral language and then emphasizes the analysis of the components that constitute reading, including phonemic and phonological awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The key theories on reading development are presented, and the stages of its development until full proficiency are analyzed. Topics of instructional methodology for the teaching of both reading and writing are developed. Subsequently, the chapter addresses reading difficulties and how to manage them by incorporating instructional strategies aimed at enabling students with reading difficulties to solve learning problems effectively and generalize this ability, applying it to new challenging situations. Ready-to-use teaching materials with integrated strategies are provided for reading, spelling, and creative writing.
