Abstract:
Factors shaping a new law: Roman law, Hellenistic tradition, the transfer of the capital from the West to the East, Christianity, the Greek language, and the education of lawyers. Sources: legislative texts with emphasis on the Justinian Novels, the Election of the Isaurians, and later imperial legislation, the Basilica and other legal works in the context of the "revision of old laws." Special reference is made to the practical value and dissemination of legal collections, the most notable example being the Hexabiblos of Armenopoulos. Legal documents preserved in papyrus collections and monastic archives also play an important role in the study of Byzantine law, while the importance of diagnostic sources, such as historical and literary works, inscriptions, seals, etc. A brief reference will be made to sources of canon law.
