Abstract:
The quality characteristics of wood, which are distinguished in the following categories, are presented: a) quality characteristics of wood with normal structure (structure of annual rings, fiber morphology, chemical composition and submicroscopic wood structure, heartwood-sapwood, juvenile wood, physical growth characteristics), b) quality characteristics of wood with abnormal structure (compression and tension wood, spiral grain, deviations of trees from their typical form, checks, color abnormalities, etc.), g) secondary quality characteristics caused from felling and processing of trees, from skidding and transportation of logs, storage in forest or industrial yards, d) quality characteristics caused by wood processing, e) quality characteristics due to various uses and conditions of wood in service. Finally, principal wood products and structures are presented.
